BEFORE ANYONE SEES IT

On uncertainty, changing your mind, and keeping an idea alive.

By the time we see a finished piece of work, most of the uncertainty has disappeared.

We see the collection, the show, the photographs. We rarely see the versions that didn't work, the conversations that changed things, or the moment someone realised they had to go in another direction.

I'm becoming more interested in that part.

Ahead of Fashion Week, I spent some time with Maximilian while his latest collection was still taking shape.

When I asked how far it was from being finished, his answer was immediate:

“God, that's the question.”

There was something reassuring about that.

We often talk about creativity as if a strong idea arrives fully formed and the job is simply to execute it. Being inside the studio reminded me how far that is from reality.

Last season, Max told me, the last collection came from heartbreak. This one is the product of what he describes as a “joyous summer.”

But alongside that emotion sits the reality of making an independent collection: budgets, partnerships, other people's expertise and the constant question of what is actually possible.

At one point Max spoke about the fear of doubling down on an idea before knowing whether you can actually make it work.

“You have to pivot and pivot and pivot.”

That stayed with me.

Maybe creative conviction isn't refusing to change an idea.

Maybe it's knowing which part of it needs protecting, and which parts you're willing to let change.

Money changes things. Materials change things. Time changes things. Other people change things. Sometimes your own understanding of the idea changes while you're making it.

The finished work isn't always the original thought perfectly realised.

Sometimes it's what survives all of that.

And perhaps that's why I'm increasingly interested in studios, workshops and the period before something becomes public.

A collection might ultimately have one person's name attached to it, but up close you see how many people pour their hands, time and belief into keeping an idea moving.

Soon this collection will become a show, then images, opinions and references.

For now, it's still changing.

Still being questioned.

Still being made.

This is before anyone sees it.
